Nancy Wirsig McClure is a designer and illustrator in Portland, Oregon, USA.

She welcomes inquiries about freelance projects and is seeking permanent employment. See the About Nancy page for her resume and contact information. See the Portfolio pages (menu at left) for samples of her work.

The focus of all of Nancy’s work is explaining:

Her graphics use a variety of styles and approaches to make the complex seem simple.

Her presentation slides use a combination of text and graphics to support a story.

Her print and web page layouts emphasize content hierarchy to foster easy understanding, and she designs web site navigation with the user experience in mind. For that portfolio, see hand2mouse.com.

Her occasional teaching and tutoring helps other graphics professionals understand software and design. She has taught college credit classes and professional development workshops.

Nancy is passionate about using Adobe software well. More about her technology expertise is on the About Nancy page.

To paraphrase Wikipedia, Information Design is preparing the visual representation of information so people can use it effectively. A graphic can express meaning more clearly to the viewer than text alone.

The information designer usually:

collaborates with content experts or does research to get the information,

analyzes the information to reduce unnecessary detail and define key points,

visualizes how to present the information graphically,

writes or edits the annotations, and

renders the image, using design principles to encourage cognitive and emotional engagement.

The process of information design obviously requires a combination of skills:

“Left brained” skills of analysis, synthesis, simplification, and writing.

“Right brained” skills of composition, color choice, and application of other design principles.

Information designers’ goals are similar to the goals of user experience design for interactive media. The focus is firmly on the users or viewers and how to create something in their minds — in this case, comprehension. When possible, an information design should be tested with real viewers to make sure that it’s readily understood and pleasing.
